1. How do I actively get to know my neighbors?
2. How do we as a meeting seek opportunities to understand communities unlike ourselves?
Some of our members live in diverse (both racially and culturally) neighborhoods. They participate in a block club, neighborhood gatherings, helping each other, and sharing home-baked cookies to welcome and express concern for neighbors.
We’ve enjoyed and grown from socializing with diverse groups of neighbors. We look forward to warmer weather when we can experience more casual interactions with our neighbors.
One member, who lives in a less diverse area had a series of difficult experiences with neighbors when she first moved in. Following a positive result in a court case, she has not so much socialized, but worked politically and philanthropically for the betterment of the community.
Most of us have not had much contact with people who struggle economically. We as a meeting ought to consider ways we might have interaction with a more economically diverse community. Considering our current political situation, we feel such opportunities will open up.
Globilization and climate change require us to take a more extensive view of the definition of neighbor. We need to see the rest of the world as our neighborhood.
